Pulpit to the Pew

Summer revivals are still going on throughout the area. Brother Jackie Richardson will be evangelist this week at Belleview church at Ethel. Brother Jason Palmer is preaching for Corinth church at Humphrey. I will have Friday night of a meeting at Aubrey this week. Pray for our ABA churches as they hold these summer revivals. Brother Gary Malone will be preaching our revival meeting here at Lakeside August 10-14.

Special Services Tonight - Brother James Calhoun, Promotion Director for the Arkansas State Mission Project, will be with us tonight to present a check from ASMP. This will pay off the debt on New Liberty Mission in Beebe. The mission members will also be here to be a part of this historic service.

Welcome New Members - We welcome Brother Glen and Sister Pat to the fellowship of Lakeside church. They came by letter last Sunday night.

Vacation Bible School - 2009

The first week of August, Lakeside will conduct a Vacation Bible School for kindergarten through sixth grade. (Our teens assist with VBS.) We will need your help to make the 2009 VBS a success. First, pray for the school. Second, mark your calendar and make plans to help. Third, get commitments; from grandchildren, neighbor kids and any other children you know. Fourth, remind them this week when and where the VBS will take place.

Requests: Director, Sister Faye has asked that you save clear, one or two liter, bottles for VBS.

Refreshments Director.Sister Doris asked that you plan to bring lots of home made cookies for each evening of VBS and for the closing program fellowship. No peanut butter please.

Singspiration and Fellowship - The fourth Sunday night of each month is given over to special music by our members and a church-wide fellowship that follows. We will have a lot of company this evening. (New Liberty Mission will be meeting with us.) Come prepared with good specials for the service and good food for the pot luck.

Budd Creek’s New Tabernacle - As many of you know, Lakeside church has committed to help in what has been called, the second phase of fund raising for the new tabernacle at Budd Creek Church Camp. Our own church goal is to raise $10,000.00 by the end of the 2010 camping season. We hope to set an example for other churches to do the same. The change jar, rent a kid, personal gifts, group offerings, etc... are all being counted toward the goal.

Men’s Fellowship - Our monthly meeting of the Men’s Fellowship will be on Monday night July 27th. All the men are invited to attend. Pot luck meal begins at 7:00 PM.

T-Shirt Order - A few Lakeside t-shirt were left last Sunday. If you missed yours, they are still available. See Janice Reidhar for details.

Sunday Morning I Cor. 16:1-12 26th in series

The collection mentioned here is the offering that was being taken up to help the Jerusalem church (Rom. 15:25-28, II Cor. 8-9). Paul wanted the church to have a desire from within to give and not pressure from outside the church. A study of the subject finds that giving does not depend on the size of churches but the condition of their hearts.

Giving to the Glory of God

I. Systematic Giving I Cor. 16:1-4 (II Cor. 9:1-5)

A. Famine swept Jerusalem area and church needed help

B. This was an offering above their regular giving

C. Bible teachings on giving has at least five features (v 2)

1. Systematic - first day of the week

2. Individual - let every one of you

3. Continual - lay by him in store (continually)

4. According to ability - as God hath prospered him

5. Thoughtfully planned - no gathering when I come

D. Systematic giving takes away most emergency giving

E. Giving proves sincerity of love (II Cor. 8:8-13)

1. The testimony of a tithe (Heb. 7:8)

2. Love has always manifested itself in giving (John 3:16)

II. Serious Opposition I Cor. 16:5-9

A. Plans of the apostle to come and winter with them

B. Staying at Ephesus until Pentecost (3rd missionary tour)

1. Great opportunities & oppositions there (Acts 19)

2. Oppositions should not discourage preachers

C. Enemies of the cross are real (Phil 3:18)

1. Some have tried to shipwreck the faith (Tim 1:18-20)

2. Went out from us but not all were of us (I Jn 2:18-19)

III. Servant’s Respect I Cor. 16:10-12

A. Timothy would be coming to Corinth

B. Paul’s concern for treatment of Timothy

1. He had often been sick (I Tim 5:23)

2. Nevertheless, he was needed and would go

C. They wanted Apollos but he refused to come

1. Apollos had a following there (I Cor. 1:5-6)

2. Eloquent & gifted preacher (Acts 18:24-19:1)

3. Division over him could have been a factor

Con. It is not the preacher that prompts such dedication. It’s all about Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
