Pulpit to the Pew

The summer is upon us with many things to claim our attention. Below are some of the things that will claim our church attention over the next three months.

What’s on the summer calendar?

ABA Meeting - Springfield, MO (June 22-25)

Teen Camp - Budd Creek (July 6-10)

Grand Prairie Camp - Budd Creek (July 20-24)

Annual Elections - Lakeside (August 2)

Vacation Bible School - Lakeside (August 3-7)

Business Meeting - The church will conduct the regular monthly business meeting at the end of the evening service today.

Budd Creek Camp Special Offering - On the first Sunday of each month we receive a special offering to help send young people to Budd Creek Church Camp in the summer. Ushers will be posted at the auditorium doors to receive this offering, following the morning service.

Teen Camp Registration - Deadline for Teen Camp pre-registration is next Sunday. Teen Camp Week is July 6-10, 2009. There is a sign up sheet on vestibule table. We have also been asked to provide a "cell leader" (at least 19 years old) to help out with this camp discussion groups.

Note: Our regular Grand Prairie Church camp will be July 20-24, 2009. Registration material has not yet been received for this camp.

Youth Choir Practice After Lunch Today

No Adult Choir Practice Today

House Warming Shower - There will be a House Warming Shower today at the new home of Brother Dennis and Sister Becky. It will be from 2-4 PM.

Ladies Auxiliary Cook Books - Advance sales for the Ladies Auxiliary cook books are being accepted. The books will be $12.00 each. You will find coupons on the vestibule table. Money for the cookbooks may be turned in to Sister Faye or Sister Brenda.

Looking for a few "Sound Men" - The Men’s Fellowship has committed to the purchase of a multi-functional (CD/DVD) duplicator for the sound room. To use a play on words, all of our men are invited to take part in being "sound men" for Lakeside in helping to purchase this equipment. Checks should be made out to the church and clearly marked on the memo line where the offering is to be used.

Vacation Bible School - Our church will conduct a Bible School August 3-7, 2009. You can help out, even now, to make the 2009 VBS a great success. First, pray for the school. Second, mark your calendar and make plans to help out on that week. Third, get commitments now; from grandchildren, neighbor kids and any other children you know. Fourth, remind them regularly when the VBS will take place.

Sunday Morning I Cor. 13:1- 13 20th in series

The church at Corinth stressed individual liberty above everything else. This led to hard heartedness and confusion. Love was a more excellent way to deal with their problems. This explanation of love as the most superior of all spiritual gifts comes in the midst of serious accusations that they had abused their spiritual gifts. Real love never fails. It is not only a superior motive, it is also a superior gift.

Church Love

I. Love’s Declaration (I Cor. 13:1-3)

A. All is vain if done w/o Christian love

1. Speaking (in any language) can be vain

a. Hollow sounds & useless words w/o love

b. Sound of brass & cymbals (used in heathen worship)

2. Knowing God’s will (understanding) can be vain

B. Faith is an enduring gift thru the church age

1. Mountain moving faith can also be worthless to God

2. Faith w/o love is nothing to God

C. Feeding poor, even martyrdom w/o love is useless

1. Profits nothing

2. There will be no reward for such service

II. Love’s Description (I Cor. 13:4-7)

A. Love Is: (v 4)

1. Patient (long suffering)

2. Kind

B. Love Is Not: (v 4)

1. Jealous

2. Proud

3. Arrogant

C. Love Does Not: (v 5)

1. Behave unbecoming to a Christian

2. Seek self-interest

3. Provoke easily

4. Keep track of wrongs suffered

D. Love Does Not: Rejoice in iniquity (deliberate sin) (v 6)

E. Love Does: Rejoice in truth (6)

F. Two Pairs of things love does in dealing with others (7)

1. Bears all things - covers for the faults of others

2. Endures all things - continues in spite of obstacles

1. Believes all things - gives benefit of a doubt to others

2. Hopes in all things - interest in future not the past

III. Love’s Duration (I Cor. 13:8-13)

A. Love never fails (greatest of all spiritual gifts)

B. Gifts of Prophecies, Tongues, Languages will end (v 8)

C. The partial is the incomplete cannon of Scripture (v 9)

D. The perfect would be the completed Word of God (v 10)

(See II Tim. 3:16, II Peter 1:19-21, Rev. 22:18-19)

Con. Moving from childhood to adult, poor reflection to a clear view, from temporary gifts to permanent gifts: faith, hope & love (v 11-13)
