Pulpit to the Pew

When Simon Peter was sinking with doubt, the Lord reached out to him and saved him from drowning in the sea (Matt. 14:24-33). God’s people often find themselves in the storms of life, believing they have faith to continue. But as Peter, when we are overwhelmed, Jesus is very near to rescue those who ask.

Sunday Morning I Cor. 14:1-12 21st in series

There was nothing wrong with the temporary spiritual gifts these people used. It was the abuse. Anything done in church worship is to glorify God and edify (build up) the church. Nothing is to be done to call attention to self. Some Corinthians were speaking just to hear themselves! Solomon said, "A fool also is full of words." (Eccl. 10:4).

Uncertain Understanding

I. Elevated Preaching (v 1-2)

A. Don’t forget about love as the motivation for all (I Cor 13:1-3)

B. Nothing wrong with temporary gifts, they were needed

C. Even so, nobody needs a new language to speak to God

D. Important that others understand the mysteries of God

II. Inspired Preaching (v 3-5)

A. Need preaching of inspired Word to built up a church

1. They did not have the completed inspired Bible

2. They were given inspired preaching to compensate

3. We preach the complete inspired Word today (II Tim 3:16-17)

B. Preaching does three things for those who hear and understand

1. Edification - builds up (Eph 4:11-12)

2. Exhortation - encourages (II Tim 4:2)

3. Comfort - soothes troubled heart (I Thess 4:18)

C. Churches receive edifying through preaching (v 4-5)

III. Importance of Communication (v 6-12)

A. Four ways to profit from speaking the Word; in any language

1. Revelation - to reveal the will of God (Rev 1:1)

2. Knowledge - to make known mind of God (I Tim 6:18-21)

3. Prophesying - preach Word of God (I Cor 1:18, Rom 1:15)

4. Doctrine - teaching Scriptures (II Tim 3:16)

B. There should be meaning to what is heard

C. Musical instruments are not noise makers (pipe or harp)

D. Trumpet - charge, retreat, rise, retire, break camp etc...

E. Need to use words easy to understand (v 9)

Con. Church is not for personal edification or to advance a personal agenda. God is supposed to get all the glory.

"No flesh should glory in His presence." (I Cor. 1:29)
