Pulpit to the Pew

Thank you so much for praying for us as we attended the American Baptist Association meeting last week. Our church was well represented among over a thousand churches and 2,500 people that were present in Springfield, Missouri. God is blessing our church, even in what is now commonly called "a bad economy". You will find a printed report is on the vestibule table with highlight of the meeting. Any questions to the report will be answered in the evening service today.

Men’s Fellowship - Our men’s fellowship will meet in the church fellowship hall on Monday, June 29th at 7:00 PM. The meal is pot luck. All the men are invited to come and participate.

Fourth of July - This Saturday, July4th, is Independence Day in the United States. Wherever you go and whatever you do, take time to give thanks to God for our freedoms.

Grand Prairie Church Camp - Camp pre-registration material may be found on the vestibule table of the church foyer. Camp will be July 20-24 at Budd Creek. Campers must be at least 9 years of age or have an adult (male for boys and female for girls) be responsible for that underage child. One adult male counselor for each 10 or fewer boys and one adult female counselor for each 10 or fewer girls. Camp fee is $65 per camper. Most, if not all, of this fee is offset by the generous offerings of our church members. This offering is received throughout the year so that anyone who wants to go to church camp will be able to do so.

Singspiration & Fellowship - Tonight we will have our 4th Sunday Night Singspiration and Fellowship. Everyone is invited to participate in this time of singing and fellowship. Practice your music for the specials and prepare your favorite cover dish for the church wide fellowship time that will follow.

Youth Choir Practice After Lunch Today

No Adult Choir Practice on 4th Sundays

Ladies Auxiliary Cook Books - Advance sales for the Ladies Auxiliary cook books are being accepted. The books will be $12.00 each. You will find coupons on the vestibule table. Money for the cookbooks may be turned in to Sister Faye or Sister Brenda.

Looking for a few "Sound Men" - The Men’s Fellowship has committed to the purchase of a multi-functional (CD/DVD) duplicator for the sound room. To use a play on words; all of our men are invited to take part in being "sound men" for Lakeside in helping to purchase this equipment. (The cost is @ $800.00). Checks should be made out to the church and clearly marked on the memo line where the offering is to be used.

Vacation Bible School - Lakeside will conduct a Bible School August 3-7, 2009. You can help out, even now, to make the 2009 VBS a great success. First, pray for the school. Second, mark your calendar and make plans to help out on that week. Third, get commitments now; from grandchildren, neighbor kids and any other children you know. Fourth, remind them regularly when the VBS will take place.

Church Lawn - The mowing season is here and some have already volunteered to help with this work. There is a sign up sheet on the vestibule table for those who would like help mow here at the church

Sunday Morning I Cor. 14:23-40 22nd in series

Activity brings personal satisfaction but does not necessarily bring edification to the body (church). The Lord’s churches are local, living and are continually to build up (Eph. 2:19-22, Matt. 16:18).

Edifying (building up) the Lord’s Church

I. Edifying through Activity? (Tongues) I Cor. 14:23-28

A. Practical application: Activity has no value for a church unless understanding from the Word is gained through the activity

B. Tongues looked foolish even in the first century (v 23)

1. Prayers have value to those who hear them (v 14-17)

2. Singing also has teaching value for those who hear

C. Tongues had virtually no value in the assembly (v 24-25)

1. Languages not known to hearer are useless

2. Understandable preaching has great convicting power (v 25)

D. Church edified with orderly service (v 26, see 33, 40)

E. Strict regulation needed to bring this problem under control

1. Three at most and then taken in turn (v 27)

2. If no interpreter for that language - keep silent! (v 28)

II. Edifying through Preaching (Prophesy) I Cor. 14:29-32

A. Already declared superior to tongues (see v 23-25)

B. Orderly service also required with preaching - taken in turn

1. Inspired preaching in 1st century was in effect

2. New Testament was still being delivered, not yet completed

3. Today we preach a completed, inspired Bible (II Tim. 3:16-17)

C. Message examined: validated or rejected by prophets (v 32)

D. Activity not bear much fruit but teaching does (Matt. 11:28-30)

III. Edifying through Obedience I Cor. 14:33-40)

A. Women never called to preach - not to use this gift (v 33-35)

1. Silence & subjection of women (I Tim. 2:9-15)

2. Sarah’s example (I Peter 3:1-6)

3. Submission of wife is voluntary (Eph. 5:22)

4. Sober minded are not blasphemous (Titus 2:3-5)

B. Word originated with God Himself - His Words (v 36)

C. Consequences of ignorance - God’s truth unknown (v 37-38)

D. Tongues were very useful before Bible was completed but

were never even close to preaching (v 39)

E. Decent & orderly worship is commanded (v 40)
