Pulpit to the Pew

Someone once said, "If you really want to know what is important to you, look at your canceled checks, it might just be Wal-Mart." Into what, do you put your time, money and energy? The Scriptures tell us "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also".

And the Lord Added: The Lord blessed last Sunday morning with two who came for church membership. Sister Nicole who came for scriptural baptism and Brother Bobby who came on promise of a letter.

Brother Joe Hellums - Our missionary at New Liberty Baptist Mission in Beebe will be with us next Sunday night. Brother Hellums will give us an update on the work in Beebe. He will also report on progress in getting the Lambert family here for the ABA meeting.

Last Wednesday night we had eighty nine in attendance for classes. Please note that AWANA/Discovery classes go by the schedule for Des Arc schools. Since the school is out next week for Spring Break; there will be no AWANA or Discovery next Wednesday night. Everyone will meet in the auditorium for prayer meeting. AWANA/Discovery will resume on Wednesday night, April 1st.

April Calendar - The sign up calendar for next month is on the vestibule table. If you have a birthday or anniversary in the month of April, write you name in on the correct date.

Fund Raiser Dinner - Ordinarily, we would have a pot luck (where everybody brings food) on the 5th Sunday, March 29th. However, there has been a slight change of plans. The Pot Luck Fund Raiser will be on Easter Sunday, April 12th and Sister Bobbie’s team will cook on March 29th.

Sunday Morning I Corinthians 8:1-13 11th in series

Christian liberty has limitations and can be abused. There was nothing sinful in itself about eating the meat that had been offered to idols. Even so, some weaker Christians had problems with the purchase and eating of this "discount" meat. Such individual "rights" need to be tempered with love and consideration for others.

Liberty Limited by Love

I. What You Know I Cor. 8:1-3

A. Knowledge alone generates conceit, arrogance and pride

1. Knowledge is at best incomplete - lots more to learn for all

2. Knowledge w/o love produces a mean and legalistic attitude

B. Love is discussed and carried through chapter fourteen

1. Charity (love) here is not affection but devotion to God

(John 15:10-13, Rom. 13:10)

2. Love is primary indicator of relationship with God (I John 4:8)

II. Who You Know I Cor. 8:4-7

A. Eating offerings to idols cannot hurt because idols are nothing

1. Taken up at Jerusalem council with Paul present (Acts 15:28-35)

2. Everyone in church knew that there is only one God (Isa. 45:18)

B. Incomplete understanding caused defiled conscience in some

III. Where You Go I Cor. 8:8-13

A. The sin was not in going but in offending a weaker brother

1. Our standing with God is based on grace not knowledge

2. There is no implied superiority among believers

B. It is a sin to do as you please w/o regard to others

C. Knowledge w/o love is only another form of ignorance
