Pulpit to the Pew

At the beginning of the worship hour, next Sunday, we will pay tribute to those who have died in military service of our country. Memorial Day, which began at the close of the Civil War, has a noble history in honoring our war dead. We are truly thankful to God for those who have given their lives to protect our freedoms and insure our liberties.

Building Fund Offering - A special offering for the Building Fund is received on the third Sunday of every month. After the morning service, you will find ushers at the auditorium doors to receive this offering.

Youth Rally - The Grand Prairie Youth Rally will meet on Monday night, May 18th, with Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. The rally begins at 7:30 PM.

AWANA & Discovery

Our AWANA and Discovery will close out the 2009 year this Wednesday night. The service will begin at 6:30 PM in the church auditorium. Our people are asked to bring home made cookies for a fellowship that will follow the awards presentations.

Missions News

Brother Livingstone Lambert - Many have been praying for our missionary in Tanzania in regard to his travel visa. The news is not what we had hoped. Brother Livingstone has been turned down for the third time. He will not be coming here this summer and will not be able to preach at the American Baptist Association meeting in June. However, there is some good news. Sister Katie has been working with the airline and most of the money we spent for tickets (non-refundable) will be refunded! We praise God who continually looks out for us.

Wedding Shower

Sunday, May 17th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM

Fellowship Hall of Lakeside Missionary Baptist Church

House Warming Shower

There will be a house Warming shower at the new home of Dennis and Becky Johnson on Sunday, June 7th. It will be from 2-4 PM. Please note their new address: 303 Norman Drive. Those who would like to help should see Sister Garri Lynn Hambrick

Congratulations to the Graduates

We would like to know if you have a young person graduating this year. There will be a list printed in next Sunday’s bulletin. Of course, high school graduation will be the focus but other graduations will also be listed (such as college, kindergarten, sixth grade). Write down the name as you want it listed, as well as where they are graduating. You may turn this information to the office today.

Please Note: We have two members of Lakeside who are graduating from high school this year. They will be included in our 4th Sunday night fellowship next week.

Sunday Morning I Cor. 11:17-34 17th in series

Remember that there were basically three things wrong with the worship at Corinth.

1. Improper submission of women (I Cor. 11:2-16)

2. Improper conduct at the Lord’s Supper (I Cor. 11:17-34)

3. Improper use of (supernatural) spiritual gifts (I Cor. 12-14)

We have dealt with the first and now move on the problems they had with the Lord’s Supper. This was very serious to God as we shall see.

Improper Conduct at the Lord’s Table

I. Divisions in the Church (I Cor. 11:17-22)

A. Forbidden to take the Lord’s Supper (v17- 20)

1. Disunity in the membership (see v 17-18)

2. Heresy in the membership (see v 19)

B. Fellowship broken by misconduct of some ( v 21-22)

1. This was not to be like their fellowship meals (Jude 12)

2. Meals brought in but not all members welcome

II. Declaration of Purpose (I Cor. 11:23-26)

A. Jesus explained it Himself (see Matt. 26, Mk 14, Luke 22)

B. Direct command of the Lord to the membership

1. Church decides how often to take it (v 26)

2. God decided the purpose, as seen in the elements

a. Cup illustrates the blood Christ shed for sinners

b. Bread illustrates the His body sacrificed for us

C. Death of Lord illustrated as often as it is taken

III. Discerning the Lord’s Body (I Cor. 11:27-30)

A. Danger of eating unworthily (for the wrong reasons)

B. Some got sick, others died from abusing the Supper

C. Solemn worship service - memorial of Christ’s death

IV. Disciplined in Mind & Body (I Cor. 11:31-34)

A. Judgement from God can be avoided (church, I Cor. 5:11-13)

1. Self examination needed (v 31)

2. Self control - Separate appetites from worship (v. 34)

B. Chastening has good points (Heb. 12:7-11)

1. God deals with you as His own

2. Peace with God is the end result

Con. This is one of only two ordinances in the Lord’s church and both are important to God. Members of a church can draw close to the Lord by participating in the Supper; if it is taken for the right reason.
