Pulpit to the Pew

Memorial Day is an important legal holiday in the United States and will be observed as a Monday holiday tomorrow. Our nation has set aside this day to honor those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Many Americans have died in the service of their country and we will take time during our Sunday morning worship service to thank God for them and for their sacrifice.

Ladies Auxiliary - The Lakeside Ladies Auxiliary will meet on Tuesday night, June 2nd at 6:30 PM.

Men’s Fellowship - The Men’s Fellowship meeting will be moved to 7:00 PM on Monday night, June 1st because of the Memorial Day holiday.

Mid Week Service 7:00 PM - From now until school starts in the fall, our Wednesday night schedule will be the same for everyone. The auditorium service will be a worship service for the summer schedule. It is a welcome break for our AWANA and Discovery teachers, as well as the young people. All you have to do is come and enjoy the service!

Prayer of Thanks - We offer a prayer of thanks for those who so faithfully do the work in AWANA/DISCOVERY. Souls have been saved and lives changed as a direct result of their efforts. Whether Commander, Directors, Leaders (teachers), Secretary, Kitchen Crew, Bus Driver, Helpers or Volunteers; we thank the Lord for them all!

Singspiration and Fellowship Tonight

The fourth Sunday evening of each month, Lakeside has what we call Singspiration. Singing, instrumental music, memory verses and inspirational readings are all a part of this monthly night for specials. This is followed by a pot-luck fellowship for the entire church. Practice your music, bring your pot-luck dish and return this evening, ready to take part.

Congratulations to the Graduates –

All the High School Graduates are to be commended for their completion of necessary work to get to this milestone in their lives. We had two of our own members to graduate high school this year. Our prayers go with them as they begin to make their way in life as responsible young adults.

We also had some of the younger set to do some graduating. We had two sixth grade graduates and three kindergarten graduates.

House Warming Shower - There will be a House Warming Shower at the Johnson’s new home on Sunday, June 7th. It will be from 2-4 PM.

Sunday Morning I Cor. 12:1-11 18th in series

The third major issue with worship in the church at Corinth was improper use of supernatural spiritual gifts. Their behavior in worship was not acceptable to God. There was a purpose, an order of importance and duration for these gifts. It is obvious that the Corinthians placed the major emphasis upon the least of all the spiritual gifts. They really seemed to like showing off by speaking in languages other than their native tongue.

Concerning Miraculous Spiritual Gifts

I. Desire for Them to Understand Spiritual Gifts (v 1-3)

A. Understanding that God is consistent - no contradictions

1. Some were coming out of pagan superstitions (v 2)

2. Some denying Christ but preaching miracles (v 3)

B. Holy Spirit is author of Word and agent of call to preach

1. Not all messages are from God (I John 4:1)

2. Not all who preach are God called (II Cor. 11:13-15)

II. Differing Gifts but God is One God (v 4-7)

A. God is the source of all these spiritual gifts

B. Matter of grace - none were deserved or earned

C. Given at God’s discretion and for His purpose

1. Diversities of gifts - gifts themselves differed (v 4)

2. Differences of administration - ministries differed v (5)

3. Diversities of operation - worked differently (v 6)

D. Not intended for private use of individual - mutual benefit

III. Three Groups of Nine Gifts Mentioned (v 8-10)

A. Two Gifts of the Mind (revelations from God) v 8)

1. Wisdom - application of knowledge (revealed Scriptures)

2. Knowledge - application of revelations

B. Five Gifts of the Will (9-10a)

1. Faith - extraordinary; as the martyrs of Heb. 11:33-40

2. Healing - instantaneous cures by Spirit power

3. Miracles - used to validate God’s spoken Word

4. Prophecy - accurately foretelling future

5. Discerning of spirits - pass judgment on revelations

C. Two Gifts of the Tongue (v. 10b)

1. Kinds of tongues - languages not studied by speaker

2. Interpretation of tongues - ability to translate for others

D. All gifts given by Spirit at God’s choosing

Con. We do not need miracles today but we do need Spirit leadership. All have something they can do in church. (Eph. 4:16)
