Sunday Morning II Cor 5:8-21 11-08-09
There is a question often asked by those whose main concern is the flesh. It goes something like this; If we are saved and will never be lost again, why should we serve God? The answer, at least in part, is found in this passage.
Why Serve God?
I. Acceptable (v 9)
A. We labor - eager to do something for the Lord
B. Hunger and thirst after righteousness (Matt 5:6)
C. Desire to be acceptable here and when we go to heaven
1. Long to hear the words, well done (Matt 25:21)
2. An abundant entrance into the kingdom (I Peter 1:11)
II. Accountable (v 10)
A. Judgment of the saved is coming for every deed done
1. Some things worthy of rewards, others are not
2. All the saved will be judged for rewards
B. Lost will be judged and cast into hell (Rev 20:11-12)
C. God is absolutely true to His Word
III. Aware (v 11)
A. No man lives or dies without touching others (Rom 14:7)
B. Spiritual condition of others should be of upmost importance
C. Persuade men because of the terror of the Lord
IV. Appearance (v 12-13)
A. Some glory in appearance - not altogether a bad thing
B. Because of change in Paul, he was accused of losing his mind
C. Others noticed the dramatic affect his salvation had upon him
IV. Affections (v 14-17)
A. God’s love demonstrated on the cross - Jesus died & rose again
B. That love constrains us (compress, compels, arrests) (v 14)
1. Profound effect of His death & resurrection saves the soul
2. Also changes the life of those who accept Him
C. That love changes us into a new person (v 17)
V. Ambassadors (v 18-21)
A. Reconciled us unto Himself - not imputing sin to the sinner
B. Ministry of reconciliation charged to God’s children
1. Ambassadors are protected by one who sent them
2. Ambassadors are accountable to one who sent them
3. Ambassadors are eventually called home
Con. As the father hath sent me, even so send I you. (John 20:21b)
